It's regularly well over 100 degrees, so it's no longer possible to take Henry outside. Even at 8am, it's climbing into the high 90's so despite my awesome stroller that has two large sun shields, it's just too dang hot for a 12 week old to be spending any QT out there. Poor kiddo is drenched in sweat and rosey-cheeked after ten minutes in an August-in-Texas environment.
This is what I'm working with here, folks. Boo. |
That rules out walks at the lake or in the neighborhood, the Dallas Zoo and the Dallas Arboretum for things for me and H to do during the day.
He's only 12 weeks, so things like children's museums are a tad too advanced for him yet.
What can a mama do with a little guy who loves visual stimulation but anything outside is off-limits until the end of September?! We're pretty much played out with all the toys we have, and mommy is going a bit stir crazy being in the house nonstop!
What are some things you've done with your kids, nieces/nephews, children you've babysat, or even things you've heard of your friends doing with their mini-me's? Is 12 weeks too young for a pool? Am I stuck to walking around a mall? Gosh I hate malls. Hate them.
Help a lady out with all your brilliant ideas! I read your blogs too; I KNOW I have some really smart and creative readers! Help me - plllllease!
My sister in Fort Worth has been running into this, too. She has a 19 month old and it's still too hot to take her out. I know that my sister does a lot of play dates with other moms and babies.
ReplyDeleteHave you thought about maybe joining a water babies class?? There have to be tons up there in DFW! That would get you and him out and about and you could meet some other moms, plus water babies is an awesome program, I hear! It's never too early to teach your baby about the water!
I like this idea! Considering how much Henry loves his baths, I'm sure he'd be great in one of these classes. And let's get real here... The only way to be outside these days is in water! Thanks girl, I'll look into it!
DeleteI hate malls too, but when kiddo was really little, he didn't know he was in a mall, he was just looking at all the stuff. Sephora was a big hit, so many colors. Are there splash pads where you live? We found those just as cool as pools but way easier with little kiddos in swim diapers.
ReplyDeleteDoing anything outside in this Texas heat is just not possible heh. I agree with the comment above about doing a water activity. Other indoor activities are something to look for as well, but with a kiddo so young there are probably not too many options. I'm sure I'll be in your boat shortly, but at least my little one will be born around wintertime so he'll be a bit bigger come next summer. What about library visits where they do story time?
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea! I haven't been inside a library in ages (embarrassing, I know...) And you're so lucky with your winter baby! If I could plan everything perfectly for #2, it would be a late Feb-early March birth. We'll see how that plan pans out, haha!
DeleteI'm not sure about here in the DFW area, but where I used to live up north, the movie theaters would have "mommy & me" afternoon movie times. It was baby/kid/stroller friendly. Even though H is so young, he's not gonna care about the movie, but its great for you to get out of the house and maybe even meet some new Mommy friends? :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea, I'll look into it!
DeleteI would suggest a pet shop for a baby that age! My babies were particularly fond of fish.
ReplyDeleteHa! That's hilarious - Henry doesn't seem to care one way or another about our dogs, but I bet he would love to watch a fish tank. Ohhh, wait - maybe a visit to an aquarium?! Yeah, I like that idea too!
DeleteOh man, I wish I had some suggestions for you but I am struggling with that as well. My little 3 month old gets so sweaty too. We take lots of trips to Target and Costco. Also, Home Depot is fun if you walk them through the lighting department. He loooves lights right now, and fans. Hope you find something cool to do!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, yeah, he's REAL big on ceiling fans! Home Depot will pretty much be heaven for little Henry, haha! Great ideas :)
DeleteThis is a tough one! I can relate with the Heat. Best bet is library or childrens museum. This is tough for any momma. Hope you find fun indoor stuff to do with your little one
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the other suggestions but do you have any baby "play" groups in the area? Obviously he's too young to play but they can be great for just getting out sometimes. You can get a little adult conversation in, there's new toys to play with etc. Pools are a great idea, 12 weeks is not too young at all, we have splash pads here that are another option but that may not do much to cool him down at his age. Library?
ReplyDeleteThere are TONS of play groups! So many, in fact, it's a little overwhelming on how to choose/get involved in them. I'm loving the splash pad idea! I've already done some research into it. Thanks lady!
DeleteKuddos to you Paige! I can't imagine how tough it'd be in that heat with a baby. My sister takes her kids to the pool and I remember her doing it around 3 or 4 months. Hey anything to keep you sane and cold is a good plan :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks! *Next time* fall and winter babies only! But yes, we're totally going to head to a splash pad soon. I just picked up a sun hat for him... Covered in sharks. Because it's shark week. BOOM.
DeleteI took my son to the pool. I didn't put him in the water but he loved watching the kids splash around. Anything with water or bubbles got him going crazy!
